چکیده

Characteristics of natural language can be illumi nated through the application of well known tools in Information Theory This paper shows how some of these characteristics can be exploited in the devel opment of automated speech and language process ing applications The explicit representation of dis continuities in a temporal sequence of sounds such as pauses in speech can be utilized to improve the transmission of information Arguments based on comparative entropy measures are used

Prosodic Information for Integrated Word-and-boundary Recognition

In this paper, we present an integrated approach for recognizing both the word sequence and the syntactic-prosodic structure of a spontaneous utterance. The approach aims at improving the performance of the understanding component of speech understanding systems by exploiting not only acoustic and syntactic information, but also prosodic information directly within the speech recognition proces...

The Effect of Word Meaning on Speech DysFluency in Adults with Developmental Stuttering

Objectives: Stuttering is one of the most prevalent speech and language disorders. Symptomology of stuttering has been surveyed from different aspects such as biological, developmental, environmental, emotional, learning and linguistic. Previous researches in English-speaking people have suggested that some linguistic features such as word meanings may play a role in the frequency of speech non...

AIOSC: Analytical Integer Word-length Optimization based on System Characteristics for Recursive Fixed-point LTI Systems

The integer word-length optimization known as range analysis (RA) of the fixed-point designs is a challenging problem in high level synthesis and optimization of linear-time-invariant (LTI) systems. The analysis has significant effects on the resource usage, accuracy and efficiency of the final implementation, as well as the optimization time. Conventional methods in recursive LTI systems suffe...

Focus detection by comparison of speech waveforms

For the e cient translation of speech by machine, the word sequence alone is not always su cient to convey the intended meaning. Prosodic information can be lost in the speech recognition process. This paper presents methods by which focus can be detected in the input speech using timing and pitch information. By comparing the prosodic characteristics of an input utterance against pro les gener...

Developing a Semantic Similarity Judgment Test for Persian Action Verbs and Non-action Nouns in Patients With Brain Injury and Determining its Content Validity

Objective: Brain trauma evidences suggest that the two grammatical categories of noun and verb are processed in different regions of the brain due to differences in the complexity of grammatical and semantic information processing. Studies have shown that the verbs belonging to different semantic categories lead to neural activity in different areas of the brain, and action verb processing is r...
